In the Hopkins poem “Spring and Fall” a young girl is saddened by watching her beloved trees shed their leaves.

“Margaret, are you grieving

Over Goldengrove unleaving?“

The poet suggests as she grows older she will get used to it and realize that all along she was reckoning with her own mortality:

“It is the blight man was born for,

It is Margaret you mourn for.”

On the bright note of this October month, let us enjoy the Beauty of passing nature. Let us see that the blight of human mortality is our way into the light of heaven’s eternity!
